The Chilbury Ladies Choir by Jennifer Ryan
Set in the rolling green English countryside, The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir is a charming and uplifting story about five very feisty members of village choir who are determined to keep the village humming as the men go off to war. Based on the true stories of Jennifer Ryan’s grandmother who was twenty when the London Blitz occurred, women found they had to step up into male dominated roles, but instead of being wearied, they found enlightening new freedoms.
This quirky endearing story that is filled with friendship and camaraderie as the women lose loved ones and face hardship, but use their choir time and music as a communal way to work through their problems and loneliness.
Reminiscent of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, it is at turns highly humorous and gently sad, but at all times a most charming and uplifting read.
