Bright Burning Things by Lisa Harding – Our Review
Sonya struggles. Like, really struggles. Poor Tommy at just four years of age has experienced and seen more adult issues than he should have in a lifetime. Every night Sonya washes away the sadness of the day with a flood of wine and ends up passed out on the floor.
Sonya was once a glamorous aspiring actress but now it’s fish fingers for dinner and a beyond messy home, Sonya just can’t keep up. It’s all too hard.
Her absent father steps in when things hit rock bottom and Sonya is forced to enter a detox run by a religious group. With her son taken from her care she must do everything she can to get him back and reunited in the home with their beloved dog Herbie.
Bright Burning Things by Lisa Harding is one of the most emotionally captivating stories I have read. It is a profound and heart wrenching portrayal of motherhood, alcoholism and desperation and all that lies between.
I could not put this book down, the perfect book to really lose yourself in.
