Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney – Our Review

Our Review…
Alice and Eileen are two young literary intellectuals, best friends from college, who are just about to enter their 30’s.

This book flicks between their separate love stories and the long, thoughtful emails they write to each other. They share their experiences of love and friendship, trying to understand the barriers they put between themselves and others. Is securing the love of someone else all they need to satisfy their feelings of hopelessness in a deteriorating world where human existence is facing collapse?

Rooney captures the mindset of the millennial generation beautifully. The four main characters – Alice, Eileen, Simon and Felix – are intelligent and emotionally intense. We get to know them slowly and separately from the start of the book, and it explodes with intensity when they eventually meet up and spend time together in the final third.

Like her previous novels, Beautiful World, Where Are You is a highly relatable, indulgent read. I didn’t want it to end.
