Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin – Our Review

Our Review…

After a bicycle accident, 15 year old Elizabeth wakes up on a boat, the SS Nile. Not sure if it is a dream, she soon learns from her bunkmate, Thandi, that they are on their way to ‘Elsewhere’ where the dead age in reverse until they are reborn. Elizabeth desperately wants to turn 16, not 14 again but with the help of the people she meets including her Grandma Betty and favourite pop idol, Curtis Jest, she makes the most of her new reality.

This is a wonderfully quirky and heartwarming novel, that also includes the perspective of the pets we leave behind, and allows us to explore grief and ponder questions about the meaning of life in a way that is perfectly pitched to young adult and adult readers, alike. Zevin’s novel will definitely appeal to readers who have loved Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones or F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
