Our Review…

Co-winner of the 2019 Man Booker prize, Girl, Woman, Other is one of the most profoundly moving reads of the year. You become engulfed in the lives, fears and triumphs of each character, mainly women, but from all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. The writing style is utterly unique. Written is a free-flowing style that absolutely works, characters cross paths as their stories and lives intersect. At times a minor character we don’t feel too much empathy for emerges fully formed in the next chapter – as we learn her back-story, changing our own mind when we view her in a different light.

Above all, these women are feisty, passionate and authentic. Often funny, sometimes tragic, they all have to deal with what feels like the insurmountable barricades of race, gender and privilege.

Girl, Woman, Other rings utterly true, at its heart it’s a love song to all women to keep pushing the barriers, to break down the walls, whether they be real or in their own minds. This is one of my very favourite reads for the year. Five stars.
