Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
This a story of adventure and survival. Brian is a 13 yr old city boy who is on his way by plane to visit his father, when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian ends up stranded in the Canadian wilderness alone. All that he has is a hatchet (a small axe) which his mother gave him before he left. Brian must then learn from his mistakes to survive. He needs shelter, food and to be prepared for the dangers of his harsh environment. From his solitude and experiences (including constant swarms of mosquitoes, encounters with a skunk, a moose and Black Bears), Brian finds the courage and determination to survive on his own. There is a great message in this book that Brian learns also-Life is harsh and we have to grow and change to survive it. We can’t give up, descend into pity and expect to be saved. We have to be strong and fight to save ourselves, whether it is physically, mentally or emotionally. I loved Hatchet and couldn’t put it down. Pre-order now at www.greatescapebooks.com.au.
