What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez – Our Review
What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez is a profound and touching novel. Written almost as a series of conversations, the narrator speaks so powerfully and authentically that it feels an honour to be an observer in the story.
When a woman begins to visit an old friend who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer they sit and explore their experiences, regrets, and grief together. It’s messy and uncomfortable and at the same time something purely heart warming and significant.
As the narrator’s smart and strong friend faces her imminent death, she is confronted and disturbed by her own aloneness in life and in death and broaches with the request for assistance in her dying.
Touched and broken she agrees to support her friend in the wish for a dignified death. With their extraordinary story unfolding, a book about the power of friendship, of the healing in telling your story and of leaving this life on your terms.
