2022 Indie Shortlisted and ABIA Longlisted- Love & Virtue by Diana Reid – Our Review
A brilliant debut novel by a young Sydney author with a Sally Rooney feel to her writing. Philosophical and eloquent – this is a contemporary read about power, privilege and feminism within the educational institutions of today.
Straight out of high school, Michaela has landed a scholarship at a prestigious university in Sydney. As part of her scholarship, she lives in the traditional female college Fairfax, neighboring the traditional boys college, St Thomas. During O-week she meets Eve, a wildly intelligent, outspoken and unapologetic philosophy student and the two become friends, despite an air of competition between them.
When a forgotten event in O-week involving Michaela comes to light, Eve challenges her about the morality of the situation and those involved. A rift forms between them as they strive to live up to their values while navigating love, loss and the pressures of being a young adult. I highly recommend this!
