Melaleuca by Angie Faye Martin is a truly outstanding addition to the crime fiction genre and you will be utterly engrossed in this gripping new read.
Aboriginal policewoman Renee Taylor is forced to return to her small country hometown to help care for her ailing mother and then she can’t wait to flee back to Brisbane.
Hoping for things to be pretty easy-going while she is seconded to the isolated community, Renee is thrown into her detective work when an unknown woman is found murdered and left down by the creek.
As Renee leads the investigation, uncovering the identity of the brutally murdered woman leads to an alarming connection between the unsolved disappearance of two young women in the same community, thirty years earlier.
Coming up against systematic racism, corruption, and prejudice she must risk her own life for the truth. Renee is a force to be reckoned with, and her formidable character is both endearing and fascinating.
I loved this crime drama; it had me hooked from the beginning. It is a profound perspective into the intersection between our dysfunctional history and the many modern-day barriers that remain. With themes of domestic violence, the fear women live under daily and the disproportionate experiences of indigenous women with violence and discrimination.
This is a powerful and thrilling read that is a real stand out. Highly recommended.
