New Animal by Ella Baxter – Our Review
New Animal is a raw and gritty portrayal of one woman’s experience of sex and death, and the intersection between them both. An absolutely amazing debut by Ella Baxter that is quite unlike anything else I’ve read and has stayed with me over the ensuing days.
Amelia is a striking and quirky young woman exploring her sexuality. She spends her days working in her family’s funeral business, as a cosmetician. Devastatingly close to profound grief.
When tragedy strikes close to home, all Amelia can do is run. Run to the depths of Tasmania and find solace in her biological father’s home. Together the two are awkward and grieving but in their own ways connecting and holding one another up.
A visceral encounter at a struggling BDSM club in the small town, Amelia’s dueling emotions and her dark sense of humour make for a funny, wise and absolutely unique read.
