No Matter Our Wreckage by Gemma Carey- Our review
‘No Matter our Wreckage’ is an unflinchingly courageous memoir by Gemma Carey, an intelligent and extraordinary woman.
As a twelve year old she was targeted, groomed and sexually assaulted by a man twice her age, adding to the devastation, her mother knew about the abuse and did nothing to intervene.
At seventeen Gemma took the perpetrator to court, without telling anyone and won her case with her abuser being found guilty and placed on the sex offenders register for life.
When she was thirty three, Gemma’s mother died of cancer leaving her with so many unanswered questions and a complex and unimaginable depth of grief.
Her memoir is an exploration of her profound inner strength, as well as the darkness, the struggle and the reconciling as Gemma comes to learn more about her mother that might just explain, why she failed to protect her daughter as a vulnerable child. While Gemma’s story is at times entirely heartbreaking her deep sense of courage and strength means she almost holds you tight as you read her story, leaving you awed, educated and inspired.
