Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) Picture Book of the Year (Shortlisted 2022)

‘Stellarphant’ is a wonderfully empowering book for any child.

Stella the elephant decides on a very ordinary Monday she wants to be an astronaut! However obstacle after obstacle is scattered in her path by Space Command, not the least qualms about her size – you’re too big, you’ll break our equipment, to discrimination about that she’s an elephant (or a woman) and the suits won’t fit, or that no-one will want to fly with her.

Written by West Australian James Foley, he says older children might spot a subtext here, where women throughout the history of the space program, like Stella the elephant have been shunned.

Illustrated with beauty and humour, be delighted to share this timely book with your little ones about having the courage and tenacity to follow your dreams.A final fold-out page of all the real animals that have been launched into space is an amazing eye-opening addition…I won’t spoil it here, but it’s truly fascinating!
