The Boy and the Elephant by Freya Blackwood (Hardback) – Our Review
This stunning new book for children from Australian author – illustrator Freya Blackwood will delight all ages with it’s whimsical illustrations and powerful messages. Illustrated without words, you can create your own story by delving into the images and the meandering, often beautifully dreamlike storyboard on each page.
My interpretation was the young boy at the centre of the story is loved but feeling very much alone and isolated, with his father busy in the home office and his mother preoccupied with the new baby. He escapes to the block next door creating fantastical adventures amongth the trees with its wildlife of birds, possums, rabbit and foxes. Unbeknown to him, he is not the only one who finds solace there. When the trees are marked for removal paving the way for a new house, with his vivid imagination and strong will finds a way to save the trees and make a new wonderful friend.
Perfect for any child (or adult), but especially for a sensitive child with a keen imagination.
