The Choke by Sophie Laguna- Review
Our Review…Sophie Laguna has crafted an exceedingly rich and malevolent world in The Choke, where young Justine bears witness to an unrelenting cycle of violence, poverty and parental neglect. If this sounds overwhelming, it somehow manages not to be- though it is a confronting read at times.
Justine’s adoring relationship with her war damaged grandfather and the beautiful friendship she forms with Michael, a young boy with cerebral palsy, are both compelling and uplifting.
The real power of this novel is in Justine, as Sophie Laguna expertly captures the voice of a child, her bewilderment at the world of adults and the choices made by them.
Sophie Laguna won the Miles Franklin award for The Eye of The Sheep, The Choke is an exceedingly powerful and in many ways important novel for our times. We are certain it to be nominated for lots of awards, including the Stella and the Miles Franklin in 2018. Review by Nicole @ Great Escape Books
