The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton – Our Review
‘The Devil and The Dark Water’ by Stuart Turton is a beguilingly dark mystery set on the high seas.
Set in 1634, during a treacherous 8 month boat journey from Batavia to Amsterdam, the ship is set to be cursed when a leper with no tongue suddenly bursts into flames after delivering a terrifying warning.
Samuel Pipps is a brilliant detective but now sits imprisoned on the ship, ready to be executed on disembarkation with an unknown crime by one of the world’s most powerful men.
Thankfully Sammy has his good friend and fellow investigator Arent Hayes desperate to uncover the alarming truth while he remains trapped below deck.
Strange and terrifying happenings intensify and complicate matters, with the risk of everyone on board being slaughtered and the ship ending up at the bottom of the ocean rapidly increasing.
All this and more make for a thrilling, intense and unique read.
