The Honest Truth, by Dan Gemeinhart.
I loved this book. It is an extraordinary novel about big questions, small moments and the incredible journey of the human spirit through the eyes of a 12 year old boy, Mark. Mark has a dog named Beau, a best friend, Jessie, likes to take photos and likes to write haiku poems and also dreams of one day climbing a mountain, Mt Rainier. Before he gets too ill, Mark decided to run away with his dog and plans to reach the top of Mt Rainier. The story that unfolds, is a fast paced adventure about a boy, his dog and the adventure of a lifetime. A series of chilling setbacks threatens Mark’s journey, but along the way he learns to let go of his anger as he realises he’s never alone so long as he’s around people who love him. There is an undercurrent theme of friendship and loyalty between Mark and Jessie and a strong message about the power of love.
