The Life of Elves by Muriel Barbery

Indescribably beautiful, the author of ‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’, Muriel Barbery has drawn all the essential elements of the earth to create a world touched by magic. Maria and Clara, two girls who have never met, are touched by fey magic, with one foot in the human world and one in the world of elves. Both found abandoned- one on a doorstop of four sisters, the other outside a remote mountainside church. They are raised and hidden from the outside world by simple villagers and the priest who protect and adore them. The hamlets they live in thrive and prosper, as if touched by the quintessential goodness and grace of the girls. But darker times are looming and peace can be a fragile thing in the worlds of men. This is one of the most beautiful books I have read in a very long time. Review by Nicole @ Great Escape Books
