The North Water by Ian McGuire
Nominated as The New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year. Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
This is an utterly fascinating story about a 19th century whaling expedition to the Arctic with the crew all hiding dark secrets and intentions. Magnificent, this is nevertheless a dark and unsettling novel. The characters leap off the pages, the depictions of their plight and struggle for survival, a need for identity and a desire for position in the world, leaves you unsettled, yet fascinated.
McGuire’s depiction of the era and lifestyle is utterly believable.Parts of the story are violent and brutal, however if you are prepared to enter this dark, realistic, powerfully told account of a whaling ship with a killer on board, you will be unable to put it down.
An incredible read.
