The Ruin by Dervla McTiernan
Our Review…Irish Garda Cormac Reilly has that one unsolved crime from when he will never forget. As a junior officer, Reilly late one evening at arrived at a remote ramshackle farmhouse where he discovers the days old body of Hilaria Blake, a terminally ill woman who has overdosed on barbiturates. He is horrified to find her neglected and traumatised children, 15 year old Maude and 5 year old Jack.
Flicker back to modern day and a recent crime has a tenuous thread to the cold case even though twenty years have passed. This story resonates with a realistically believable plot and very real characters. This is a special book and the uncompromising Irish language ticked all the boxes for me. For lovers of good BBC style crime this is a winner, I loved it.
