The Survivors by Alex Schulman – Our Review
An excellent Swedish translation which is first and foremost about the bonds of brotherhood in good times and very bad. Set in the family’s holiday cabin in a forest by a lake with no-one for miles.
The very restrained and strict parents who remain nameless oversee the three brothers Benjamin, Nils and Pierre, keeping often to themselves with little warmth towards the boys. The mother only finds joy in the dog Molly, a timid little thing. An underlying sinister feeling throughout as the drunken husband causes a car crash and they flee into the forest, police arrive and the family leaves the cabin and moves back to town.
Years later after their parents are both dead they return to confront what really happened here, surprising, heartbreaking twist that makes sense of the rest. Profound and emotional.
