Our Review…
Fourteen-year-old Martha is struggling to find her place in the world. Her glamorous mother is emotionally distant, her beloved father physically distant. She finds solace in the world of Roman mythology – especially the Underworld – and in her friendship group at boarding school. But she never feels like she can truly be herself, even around her friends, and certainly not with her family. Only in myths does life seem to make sense.
The Underworld takes you on a journey with Martha – through her school days and onto University. It’s not an easy journey. There is fun and laughter but a lot of heartache along the way. She has to navigate family life and relationships, school friendships, study, her changing body, her changing feelings. It’s a lot – as anyone who remembers these awkward years knows all too well. Sophie Laguna has an incredible ability to bring that time to life, especially the parts of being a teenager that are most difficult. Exploring identity, fear, imagination and acceptance, The Underworld is an emotional story tenderly and poignantly brought to life.
