Some picture books make you stop and marvel, and Through a Darkening Sea is one of them.

Claire Saxby has a wonderful way of making nature feel both epic and deeply intimate. Her lyrical text follows the slow descent of a great whale into the deep ocean, where what seems like an ending becomes the start of countless new lives. As the whale drifts into the darkness, an extraordinary underwater world begins to stir, reminding us that nature has its own remarkable rhythms and surprises.

Peter Cheong’s collage illustrations are absolutely breathtaking. Bursting with texture, rich colour and incredible detail, every page invites you to pause and look a little closer. The journey from the sparkling blue surface to the mysterious depths is beautifully captured, with strange and wonderful sea creatures waiting to be discovered along the way.

This is one of those rare picture books that blends storytelling, science and art so seamlessly you hardly notice you’re learning. It’s a book to read aloud, pore over together, and return to again and again. A truly beautiful celebration of the hidden wonders of our oceans that will leave readers of every age filled with curiosity and awe.
