What Happened to You? by James Catchpole (Hardback) – Our Review
‘What Happened to You?’ by James Catchpole is a fantastic picture book that is ultimately about building bridges and forging friendships.
In the book, Joe is a little boy with an obvious physical disability and is tired of being asked, “What happened to you?”
Sonia, another child at the playground empathises with Joe and begins to recognise how draining it is to satisfy the constant questions from strangers.
Eventually, Sonia and Joe begin to play together and the rest of the children join in and have fun connecting.
Written from the authors lived experience, making him the best qualified to speak on the topic rather than an able-bodied person.
This book is a brilliant representation of physical difference so often missing in literature and so cleverly opens discussion and educates powerfully from a young age.
