Currently Long-listed for 2015 Miles Franklin Award
The hauntingly beautiful story of a young girl transformed by the power of kindness from award-winning author Favel Parrett. The ship Nella Dan is bright red – the color of hope. It transformed young Isla’s imagination, a child desperately needing lightness and wonder. Living with her brother and mother in Hobart, Tasmania was different from what she had possibly imagined. They had left the Australian mainland when her parents separated, however she and her brother would ring their father every two weeks from the phone box down at the corner. But Hobart was chilly and bleak and her mother’s quiet sadness constantly haunted her.

So when the beautiful bright ship entered Isla’s life, and Bo, a great bear of a sailor whose home was in Denmark found and befriended the family, Isla was thrilled. Nella Dan travelled to Antarctica on a regular basis, delivering men, and fresh food to the residents – Bo was a seasoned sailor, working in the galley to prepare much needed sustenance for the sailors above deck. The tales he bought back and regaled to little Isla told Isla and her family brightened their lives – stories of the soaring petrels, which lived in Antarctica to tales of Denmark and the little boat he had which his father, had owned as well as life on board the Nella Dan.

Pure, beautiful and evocative, this is once again another powerful novel for Favel Parrett, author of the multi award winning, Past the Shallows. RRP: $27.99
Event: Favel is appearing at Great Escape Books Saturday November 1st at 7pm – Melbourne Cup Weekend.
