2022 Indie Shortlisted and 2022 ABIA Longlisted – When Things Are Alive They Hum by Hannah Bent – Our Review
Fall in love with the heart warming story of Marlowe, who is living and working as a scientist in England and her sister Harper, a high functioning Down Syndrome girl living in Hong Kong with their father, stepmonster (Harper’s words) and the girls aunty.
Marlowe loves receiving the magical letters from Harper, but this time she wants her to come home – Harper’s heart is rapidly deteriorating and the doctors all agree she doesn’t have long to live. However when Marlowe rushes to Hong Kong, she finds she cannot accept the outcome, embarking on her own quest to save her sister. Transplants are hard to come by and Harper’s condition puts her at the bottom of the list.
This book is so inspiring and while there were tears, When They Are Alive They Hum, it is such a beautiful tribute to the power love.
