Wimmera by Mark Brandi

Our review:
For fans of The Dry, this is a literary crime novel set in the 1980’s in a small Victorian town in the harsh landscape of the Wimmera. It is the story about two boys, Fab and Ben. We follow them from young boys playing backyard cricket, yabbying in the local dam, camping and negotiating life at home and school, onto an adolescence marked by their own sexual awakenings and an experience that will haunt their troubled adulthood. From the opening of the novel we know there is a brutal discovery waiting to unfold when two young brothers discover something inside a rubbish bin in the local river – but this sits lurking quietly behind the scenes, never being prominent in the narrative. As you open these pages you will be drawn into a dark world in a small country town and as much as you will want to leave it behind, it won't let you! Wimmera is an unsettling, thought provoking and powerful novel that is much more than a murder mystery because it develops additional ideas about friendship, loyalty, grief and justice. Highly recommended. Review by Jenny @ Great Escape Books
