Vega Jane and the Secrets of Sorcery by David Baldacci – Our Review
Crime writer David Baldacci has created a great sophisticated fantasy world with his first book for young teens, Vega Jane and the Secrets of Sorcery.
Vega Jane has had to be brave and resilient. With her parents removed and her beloved grandfather gone, she is living on her wits and intelligence in the highly controlled industrial village of Wormwood.
Completely isolating and encircling Wormwood is a dense forest – the vast Quag, a deadly terrain populated by terrifying monsters – some of which find their way into the village from time to time.
Wormwood itself is a place of fear, poverty and hunger. Ruled by a powerful council, there is little to enjoy, it is a place of control with very real terrors to keep people in line. Yet many people, including her grandfather disappear into the wooded Quag, never to return. Curious by nature, Vega Jane wonders if there is anything beyond its isolated borders? Could there possibly be a better world, one that has been kept from them?
With a superb heroine, this is a great fantasy read for ages 10 plus.
