The Offing by Benjamin Myers – Our Review
Set in Durham UK after the 2nd World War in a grey, dirty industrial town with no future but the mines. Young Robert Appleyard takes a break from his future to wander the countryside enjoying the things he loves; birds, plants, insects and creatures big and small.
By the sea he befriends Dulcie an older slightly eccentric lady who has seen the world and lives in a cottage with her dog. He works, eats glorious food no one else can get and she introduces him to beauty, poetry and life in other countries and a world he can only imagine, and best of all an education he could only dream of seems within his grasp.
A book filled with love that captures the beauty of nature. A timely read and a real treat to enjoy at this present time.
