Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter – Our Review
I am normally very sceptical about books on pets, or anyone on a social media platform. However, when this memoir was personally handed to me by one of the owners of Text Publishing, with an entreaty to read it, I decided to give it a crack.
So, the verdict- completely wonderful and totally uplifting, filled to the brim with that dry British humour that is hard not to love.
Essentially, it’s the story of top sports commentator, Andrew Cotter, who one day is jet-setting around the globe commentating on Wimbledon, the Rugby Cup and more, to the next day out of a job, at home with his ‘two very good dogs’. As a lark, he makes a short clip commentating on the rivalry between his two dogs. This goes viral as people pick up on the good news story.
Fortunately, it’s not really about YouTube success, that just the opener. It’s more about a celebrating joy of the small things, with a little bit philosophy and love of the companionship of dogs and strangely – mountain climbing, thrown in. Altogether it works brilliantly – a totally wonderful mix that is a perfect tonic in these challenging times.
